I genuinely enjoyed this, though it did take about 85 pages for me to feel truly invested. I'm very excited to read the rest of the series.

No content warnings; was extremely triggering. Also: author poorly handled criticism; used racial stereotypes in effort at inclusion; claimed bisexual fantasy romance yet 1/3 of the book the characters are minors and no sign of bisexual content makes it feel like baiting

The amount of times I almost DNF-ed this. I should have and saved myself some time lol.

The first red flag in the book is the constant description of Amaris' white skin as pure and beautiful, while Nox, the only POC character, is the only one to be whipped. Additionally, Amaris romanticizes life as a farmer or noble man's wife, while Nox tries to protect her friend during a traumatic event. The writing style attempts to mimic Tolkien or C.S. Lewis but falls short, resulting in the book dragging on with chapters dedicated to mundane tasks. Overall, the book is disappointing and only receives one star despite being a gift and on my to-be-read list.

I had fun with this. It’s not necessarily the most original fantasy book I’ve read but I still rather enjoyed it. I liked the characters for the most part. I see what Piper CJ is doing with this. SJM did the same with Throne of Glass which is start out slow and unoriginal and then EXPAND. I didn’t see the plot twist with Moirai coming and I didn’t see some of the other twists that Amaris had. I really want to see where this romance is gonna go because there’s so much potential!

accidentally stated w the sequel so i ran back to read this. absolutely worth it. I wouldn’t say the reading so much of the second book ruined the first one at all, but obviously going in order was a better experience. i’m sort of wary of fae books in general (haven’t read anything in the genre really) but this was a very satisfying fantasy read. kinda hard to review the first two books individually since it feels like one big book to me but the pacing was good, i liked the magic system and the monsters, we had a good mix of people in our main cast, the stakes were high but not too high, the reveals were good. if you’re looking for a good fae/fantasy entry point or just a good fantasy book in general, great choice.
