It wasn't really a very good book but I couldn't stop reading it, so there you go. Lots of back story for each character, took a long time to get to the part where something happens.

I had a very slow start on this book. I wasn’t sure what in the world was going on or if I even liked any of the characters, but part 2 (of 3) finally caught my interest enough to read more than a chapter at a time, and I read part 3 in a few hours. I’m not big on family dramas and I have a love-hate relationship with the actual storyline of this one, but it was well written, entertaining, and thought provoking.

The whole author who sold her book to become a movie trope seemed a little too much like her previous book (And herself) But not so much as a Maria Semple book. There was enough characters and diversity that I found myself able to see myself in aspects of both of Ruby's mothers. Not to mention that this book is so relevant that it takes place during the pandemic.

One thing I didn't like was that two people under 40 were called middle aged. Excuse me?

Otherwise once we were let in on all the double lives and double crossing, things started to pick up and by the end I found myself needing to find out what happened.

All of these characters are super likable and I really like Jennifer Weiner's style of writing.

This was not my favorite Jennifer Weiner book.

This is a family drama that just has too many coincidences to be believed. The fact that each main character had an earth shattering secret was also unbelievable. I struggled to get through it but was interested enough to get to the final outcome.

Too many coincidences made the story seem unbelievable.

I was really excited when I saw Jennifer Weiner was coming out with another book as I thoroughly enjoyed Big Summer. I was hoping The Summer Place would be a sequel to it or something similar, so I was a little thrown off when it wasn't. That is my fault, as I didn't read the synopsis before I started.

However even with that being said, I thought that this book was not Weiner's best work. I thought that the story was trying to stay relevant with COVID, but the references and the "ugh, life" of it was just a little over the top. I appreciated that it wasn't a cookie-cutter "we fell in love and got married!" kind of story, and it ended up being more about a young woman figuring out who she is.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

3.5⭐️I listened to this book and it was a little confusing keeping the characters relationships straight. Lots of twists and overall entertaining.
