I must have been the last person to start reading this book not knowing it was a story. Didn’t take me too long to catch on and loved the softly softly approach to revealing the world. As this particular sub-genre goes I thoroughly enjoyed it and liked the scientific explanation for everything so I didn’t have to put my Fantasy appreciation hat on.
Nice character building and development and an interesting plot, not totally original I guess but different enough to keep me enjoying it all the way to the end.

Set in a post apocalyptic world where a fungus has crumbled modern society and ravenous monsters threaten what’s left of it, a young girl does what she can to save those that she cares about. The girl with all the gifts is a tense read from start to finish with a fair amount of excitement but also sadness. I’ve seen this compared to The Last of Us and I agree that if you enjoyed the game or show, this might be a good one for you. I’ll be looking forward to reading more M.R. Carey books.
Three stars because I enjoyed it enough but might skip The Boy on the Bridge if it’s not a continuation.

Started out great, but it lost me towards the end. Ms. J got annoying from time to time. Don't think I'll be reading the other book or seeing the movie, especially with them changing the characters the way they did.

Great book, the beginning was just so good that I was worried in the middle if I would like where it ended, but I did. Melanie is one of my very favorite characters ever, I could have read about her forever.

I didn’t realize it when I picked this book up, but The Girl With All The Gifts is actually the sequel to The Boy On The Bridge. You can read them both as stand-alone books, but they both tell stories of the same world: a world that has been decimated by the fungus known as Ophiocordyceps.
The fungus has infected what have come to be known as ‘hungries’ (zombies), and it takes over the human body and brain, progressively overriding and shutting down most conscious thought and free will. In some, like young Melanie, the fungus doesn’t have quite the same effect. Melanie is definitely a hungry, but she’s somehow retained a sense of self and significant control over her own behaviors.
When the established military base and research facility where Melanie is being held gets overrun by hungries, a small group of survivors is forced to go on the run. Melanie joins them and proves that she’s no ordinary zombie, changing the way they think about Ophiocordyceps. For Dr. Caldwell, Melanie’s self-awareness and pseudo-immunity to the fungus makes her an invaluable science project, where Ms. Justineau recognizes more and more the humanity that’s still such a part of Melanie.
And Melanie is just a kid, trapped in the middle, coming to terms with herself and slowly realizing that she’s in all kinds of danger despite being the only one who’s unsusceptible to the hungries’ appetites.

This is a terrifying and excellent read. I’m someone who hasn’t read hardly any horror. The sci-fi parts of this kept me engaged past my general I don’t like being scared mentality. The really great science depiction and how real and possible it felt kept me at it. Really excellent characterizations too. I felt for even the truly evil ones. There was complexity to them that only truly excellent writers can give. I felt the humanity of the just human monsters. This horror feels like in some version of reality it could happen. My curiosity was hooked constantly so i couldn’t help but come back for more after having to put it down after being genuinely horrified many many times. I’m very glad I did. It’s easily in my top 3 best reads of the year. If you don’t normally do horror but love science fiction give it a chance. Though you’ll need a strong stomach, the body horror is a lot, but I adapted.

Another zombie apocalypse novel. A well-plotted one, with intriguing characters (except for the redshirt whose fate is obvious from the first line), but ultimately just another zombie apocalypse novel.

It was a lot different than I expected, but I still liked it. The ending was heartbreaking, yet perfect at the same time.
There were moments that nothing was happening and the plot was extremely slow paced, but then at other times a lot was happening at the same time. I wasn't really fan of that. But all in all it was a great story, even though it wasn't what I expected.
