Viola Davis has such a unique but universally relevant story and listening to her tell it was such an incredible experience.

I had no reason to pick this up other than I loved Viola Davis in How to Get Away with Murder and a celebrity memoir can be fun. While I wouldn't describe this as fun in the slightest, it is moving and compelling. Davis lived an incredibly hard life and expresses compassion for those who lived it with her, including some who contributed to her resulting trauma. Heed the content warnings - I likely missed some - but it's worth the read, and as a bonus for the audiobook, she narrates it herself.

Davis has lived a life full of good and bad times, torture and fame, love and grief. While reading, I consistently found myself wanting more — details, anecdotes, snapshots of the past. What has been written is engaging, entertaining, and at times even inspiring but I still wished for more. Davis’ role as Annalise Keating is one of my absolute favorite television roles and I would read two more books this length about her life, her time on different sets, and the people she’s worked with who she came to love and respect.

Oof. Viola Davis is one tough lady. This whole book should come with a giant trigger warning.
