Keinginan untuk membaca buku ini seketika muncul ketika membaca ulasan buku Aroma Karsa karangan Dee Lestari. Since i'm citizen of the digital tribe, sejumlah teman komunitas ikut menyarankan untuk membaca buku Perfume ini. They said, Aroma Karsa memiliki topik yang serupa dengan buku ini.

So, yes, Aroma dan Parfum is so relatable.

He was born in Paris, France and left by his mom.

This is where the serial murder happened also.

I think this was a well-crafted, original, and highly disturbing novel that ultimately just wasn't my cup of tea. (Or, being more honest, my brand of soda.) I didn't know too much about the story going in, but what I had assumed would be the plot of the book was more like a two-page summary of events from other people's POVs. In some ways, Perfume is not a very active book, and actually rather reminded me (structurally speaking) of something you might have read in school . . . only WOW, would this not be allowed in school. My god, the fits people would have.

There were three moments in this book that were DEEPLY creepy, one of them being the story's big, climactic scene. It's, well. Original. I really don't feel like anyone could have predicted what happened there. I do enjoy that, and the actual ending itself. Also, for a book that's basically entirely about unlikable people doing unlikable things, I found it relatively easy to read.

That being said, I wasn't particularly engaged in the story. Possibility this had something to do with the fact that there are no even halfway decent characters in this book. Perfume takes a sardonic and ultimately rather dim view of humanity, and while occasionally funny, I usually need someone or something to invest in. The only possibly not-terrible people in this book are the beautiful women with their beautiful odors who never say anything at all. This is not a book to look to if you're searching for interesting female characters.

I also found it a bit slow to start -- not unreasonably slow, but I've found that I'm not a huge fan of 'Evil Since Birth' stories, and couldn't really muster up any interest until Grenouille started taking a more active role in his own story. (Maybe fifty pages in?) I also found the author's habit of telling us the miserable ends of everyone who encounters our horrific protagonist more annoying than clever.

I'm curious to see the movie adaptation now. I expect many, many things have been altered.

This was Kurt Cobain's favourite book, and he is quoted as saying it, "makes me want to cut off my nose." All I have to say is, same.

I found it difficult to give this book a rating, as I don’t quite know what to make of it! The atmosphere was unique - it felt very cold and detached. However I feel like that ended up being a double edged sword, as it meant that I didn’t find Grenouille compelling enough to love the book.
