This started off so well. Three different women dealing with their own lives and struggles. In the first few chapters, their stories are presented separately. By chapter 7, their stories are brought together to show how all of their lives are affected by the secret of the husband of one of the women. I liked the self-assuredness of the three main characters in the first half of the book, but by the end, all three of them had lost that and were almost caricatures of themselves. The idea for the plot was a good one, but seemed to be a little haphazard in the second half of the book. The whole book was tinged with melancholy and ended on a terribly sad note.

The secret seemed pretty obvious, but the story's path after you realize the secret is unknown and intriguing. The epilogue got me. Damn.

Can I just say that I love love love it when author's fabricate the "could have been"? This was ultimately my favorite part of Moriarty's writing, the imaginary alternative to these character's lives. Her storytelling is superb, and I look forward to reading the rest of her books.

I always forget how compulsively readable Moriarty’s books are! This book has some problematic subjects and I wasn’t 1000% on board with the way the conflict was handled in this, but I do think there is some really good discussions and relationships in this even the crap ones. I Also laughed out loud and cried and could not put the damn book down. Since that doesn’t happen often for me I gotta make it 4 stars even if I had some issues. I want more books that I NEED to read asap and less books that I can walk away from easily.

Loved this book. Much better than her last book (The Hypnotist's Live Story). Big moral dilemma which gives quite a bit to think about. Great characters.
