I read this book in second grade and the imagery it presented still affects me very strongly. I would recommend this book for any child.

Kid's misbehave so a "substitute" teacher scares them straight. I'm just not buying it. Though the twist makes the book not horrible, it doesn't rescue it to the point that it was exactly good. The art and writing are good enough but nothing all that special.

I left my students hanging. We read the first part, right up to where the police are searching for Miss Nelson. The ending was just too tempting...I finished it myself after they left the room. I remember reading the book as a child, and had a vague memory of the switch, but enjoyed the reveal again as if it were the first time. Maybe I should go in character to the next class. Bwahahaha!

This story is really for school age kids, but it's a picture book and my three year old picked it up and insisted on reading it. I was hesitant, as the character of Miss Swamp is quite ghastly and my son is easily scared. He held it together however, with eager interest, and then later related the story to me quite accurately. I don't imagine he understood the twist in the story, but it held his attention and apparently had just the right amount of scariness to it. I myself was rather amused and I expect we'll be reading other stories from the same series.

I loved this one as a kid- I was wondering if it would hold up, and I think it does!

I had a copy of this one floating around as a kid. Then one day I saw an episode of Reading Rainbow which featured Miss Nelson is Back (part two in the series). Reading Rainbow really did have the ability to bring books to life because this book was barely on my radar until after I saw that episode, then it became a favorite.

This is one of my favorite books, and I like to read it to my students before I am gone for a couple of days. They connect with it and can see that teachers live lives outside of school and are regular people.
