This book surprised me with how it hooked my interest since I tend to dislike post-apocalyptic books. The characters faced tense situations but these situations seemed more realistic and not constantly fraught with danger just for the sake of ramping up tension. The other aspect that had me wary before starting my read was the romance since I tend not to enjoy a lot of romance heavy books. While the romance that developed, especially in the last quarter of the the book ultimately dampened my experience a little, Brown did an excellent job building the relationship between the characters, a realistic development of a romance in a terrible situation.

Oh I ended up loving this book so much more than I thought I would! It was such a delight and a page-turner. Something is always happening and made me always want to know what was going to happen next.

I was a little worried that it would hit a little too close to real-world stuff, but somehow the author managed to tactfully avoid that in some weird way.

Bottom line: CUTE POST-APOC STORY ABOUT QUEER BOYS, GO READ.

After a superflu wipes out most of the world's population, Andrew wanders into a bear trap and limps up to Jamie's front porch. Andrew has spent months alone, and (despite his light-hearted narrative voice) carries a heavy guilt for his past actions, while Jamie is recently bereaved, and (despite retaining his sweet, affectionate nature) has been deeply affected by his loss. Once Jamie nurses Andrew back to health, they must face the threat of other surviving humans, as they try to make their way through the ruins of North America towards some kind of better future.

All That's Left in the World is a quietly affecting post-apocalyptic story, focused on the growth of Andrew and Jamie. I could see it making a beautiful film, and it was incredibly cinematic, especially the soft moments between Andrew and Jamie in the cabin. Personally I think it was a shame this had to be YA, because for my personal tastes I would have preferred something darker and gorier, especially considering the themes and content very lightly hinted at in the Fort. I personally felt the stakes were too low for most of the book, making the threat fairly low-level, although I did feel the true fear on those occasions when Andrew and Jamie were faces with enemies. I'm a little disappointed because I felt as though there was so much more emotion to mine from the depths of the main characters, and only very rarely did I feel an emotional connection. It's a beautiful story, I just wish it had given me a little more to hurt my heart.

GOD I loved this. I read it in one sitting. I'm usually an enemies to lovers kinda person but this really put me on friends to lovers. I liked that it was an end of the world story that focused more on human nature than anything else, and that it explored a pandemic esq scenario without constantly mentioning covid, and I'm always such a sucker for alternating POV chapters.
