This is a fabulous collection of stories and vignettes, funny and sparkling and full of life and regret (and wickedness). Truly, every one of them is gold.

If I had a time machine, I would go back and give Angela Carter a big wet kiss.
This collection is an inspiration to readers and to women.

This book certainly had more misses than hits for me. My favourite by a long shot was The Plums by Ama Ata Aidoo, but I also enjoyed Violet by Frances Towers, The Last Crop by Elizabeth Jolley, and The Debutante by Lenora Carrington

as expected w short story collections, esp ones not entirely comprised of the compiler’s stories, there were some stories which were a pain to get through, but i read on for the delightful hidden gems buried within the more average stories.
top three:
“the last crop” , “the rainy moon” & “oke of okehurst”
honourable mentions: “the young girl” “the earth” “the loves of lady purple” “girl” & “life”
will probably reread this sometime in the future & annotate!
