Thomas Erikson always pleasantly surprises me. I have to admit I didn't have high hopes for this, even though I enjoyed Surrounded by Idiots, but this was actually a decent and fairly insightful look at manipulation and coercive abuse dependent on the person, and how manipulation doesn't always present in the same way. I can certainly see this book being helpful to some.
However, I am always wary of non-psychologists straying into psychological territory. Although Erikson generally does a good job of staying in his lane, I did take some issue with some of the problematic language used and the potential for it to be stigmatising, as well as some lack of clarity concerning the pathology of antisocial behaviour and manipulation versus psychopathy as a Dark Triad personality trait.
Overall this was a decent and fairly enjoyable read, but proceed with caution in some areas and keep nuance in mind.
