Se7en x Saw x True Detective S1

The Crucifix Killer is a bingeable crime thriller that is relentless with its pacing. Chris Carter has been on my TBR for years now and I can see why he's so popular. I love a good seasoned and rookie detective pairing as well. Looking forward to seeing how Carter's writing evolves throughout the series as it is a little devoid of emotion.

This book is dark and gory - again see comparisons above. It is graphic and gritty.

The ending did leave me wanting with some under explained threads.

A couple moments/dialogue show their age (published in 2009) for political correctness, racism, homophobia, sexism and fatphobia.

Wow. What a book. Fast. Obsessive. Excellent shock.
Detective Hunter is given annew rookie partner, Garcia. Together they arrive at a brutal crime scene - a woman's face peeled off while still alive. Tortured and beaten. Finally her body gave out.
Only the mark of the Crucifix Killer is on her neck - a man already convicted and executed for the previous murders.
Hunter must find the real killer - before the public learns the truth.
Highly recommend.

Wow, what a fantastic start to a new to me series! My attention was held from start to finish, and I have another excellent detective pairing to add to my list of must reads. I thought that Robert Hunter & Carlos Garcia worked well together, and I liked the lack of alpha male posturing from Hunter when he was partnered with new detective Garcia. Detective Hunter is the main character & I thought he was a fantastic character. This story is not for the faint of heart - it’s bloody, gory and gruesome. In my opinion, the gorier the better for this type of detective story, and it sounds like this series is exactly that! This story moves fast & there’s plenty of cliffhangers to keep you reading just one more chapter. While I guessed the killer, I found it took nothing from the story as I had no idea why they did what they did. I’m looking forward to reading more in this series.
