Loved this, and love Eve Bunting. She always chooses such unusual, sensitive topics for children's books. This one is about a special Christmas Eve (with a bit of a Christmas miracle) that a boy celebrates with his mother in the cardboard box in which they live. Not fake, not cheesy. Well done.

A story about how there is always something to give or share, no matter how little you have.

A beautiful story about the true meaning of Christmas. Simon and his mother live on the streets in a home they fashioned from cardboard boxes. On Christmas Eve a woman knocks on their "door", and although they have so little, Simon and his mother share what they do have. In the morning the woman is mysteriously gone leaving Simon to wonder who she was.
For a teaching moment I ask my students to close their eyes and picture their homes and their own bedroom...and imagine Simons world. It's a lesson about empathy, sharing, caring, and tolerance.
