A Study in Charlotte
3 Stars

Charlotte Holmes and James Watson are the modern-day teenage descendants of Arthur Conan Doyle's illustrious characters. Studying at Sherringford, a prestigious private school, Holmes and Watson are framed for the murder of a classmate and must work together to solve the crime and clear their names.

Unfortunately, this retelling is very disappointing. To begin with, neither Holmes nor Watson are particularly interesting or likable characters, and they come across as nothing more than spoiled, whiny, self-absorbed and angsty teens. Moreover, their relationship is more than a little strange - a confusing mix of reluctant allies, friends and teenage crushes.

The mystery has potential, but the execution leaves much to be desired. The plotting is somewhat lazy and overly simplistic, and it is relatively easy to discern the culprit. The inclusion of references to Conan Doyle's works is clumsy with excessive and unnecessary detail and explanation.

Overall, neither the writing nor the story are particularly good. For a much better Holmes retelling, Sherry Thomas's Lady Sherlock series is highly recommended.

Such a great book! An excellent twist on the Sherlock Holmes/Dr. Watson dynamic. Can't wait to read the next book in the series!!!

I listened to this on Audio and I really enjoyed it. I think that being on audio prevented my from skipping ahead which was good because I think I might have spoiled it for myself otherwise. I also feel like being on audio and reading mysteries lets me immerse myself in the experience more and I didn’t find my self anticipating every single plot twist. I have read a couple of different Sherlock related books and I have enjoyed all of them. I look forward to continuing with the series!
