This was one of my most anticipated reads, and @benaldersonauthor did not disappoint. After such an intense prequel, I was slightly apprehensive about where the story would go next. There's even more action, magic and an absolutely epic love story at the heart of this one.
Usually, I'm not a fan of romances in the fantasy genre. Often, authors force their main characters with a toxic and problematic love interest. Alderson completely subverts this trope - Simion is an absolute gem of a character, and Max has grown and matured as a character, their respective character developments shining through.
This book was much darker than its predecessor, and the ensemble cast had much more screen time, which was perfect and reminded me of the earlier seasons of Game of Thrones.
Ewan Goddard reprised his role as narrator and was spectacular in bringing Max's narrative voice to life. There were a couple sound errors in the audiobook, which did not take away from the overall experience, but hopefully, the publishers can fix the two sound hiccups in the near future.
The ending sets up an epic final,e and I cannot wait to see how this series wraps up in 2024.
