They had the audacity to put a man on the cover of this book.

The one time I decided not to read the summary, I stumbled into a horror movie. I don’t have much to say about this, but I’m glad Kennedy Ryan got more thorough with trigger warnings in recent books. Cause why were there whole chapters of Iris getting abused and raped…. I’m not talking mentions; in gruesome detail. It was absolutely draining and I skipped them, but still! Then there was August. He was great but I didn’t give a damn about what he had going on. There were lives at stake! The book had great underlying messages and seeing Iris’s growth and survival was satisfying. I wish we’d gotten more of that but most of the book was her being trapped. I felt like I was being held hostage with her. Then when she finally walked out the house, it went pretty smoothly which threw me. That transition in the book was probably the weakest. We saw none of her plans to take Caleb down or nothing. She just summoned his team the next day and we were there. By the time she and August got together, I didn’t care much, unfortunately. We got so much detail of the abuse that everything else felt shallow because it wasn’t given the same attention, in my opinion.

5/5 ⭐️ The content and trigger warnings are accurate as this is a very heavy read specifically with violent domestic abuse. Kennedy does a great job writing with care while also making it realistic based on her research and interviews she says she did prior to writing this story. I have not personally been in that situation but while reading the first half of this book my heart ached for Iris.
The moments she had with August (the hero) were so delicate and pure. Some parts were so good between them I was scared to continue reading because of fear of what would happen to Iris if she was seen with August. I appreciate how every time they cross paths August reminds her to put herself and her dreams first, regardless of whatever she might be going through that he is unaware of.
I also love that regardless of what she and her cousin had going on or them not being on speaking terms, they had each other’s backs. Especially when Iris needed help.
I love how patient August was and keeping his word about Iris being at the center. Even when she wasn’t yet able to share what she experienced he still kept her and her daughter at the forefront. The way he cares for Iris and Sarai just warmed my heart. Even though this book was a heavy read, it was an absolutely beautiful story and written with such care. Kennedy Ryan never misses.

Internal monologue and overly descriptive writing slowed the story down

Not fluffy, enemies girl sports romance, didn’t love any of the characters but no second act breakup so that’s nice
