5/5 ⭐️ The content and trigger warnings are accurate as this is a very heavy read specifically with violent domestic abuse. Kennedy does a great job writing with care while also making it realistic based on her research and interviews she says she did prior to writing this story. I have not personally been in that situation but while reading the first half of this book my heart ached for Iris.
The moments she had with August (the hero) were so delicate and pure. Some parts were so good between them I was scared to continue reading because of fear of what would happen to Iris if she was seen with August. I appreciate how every time they cross paths August reminds her to put herself and her dreams first, regardless of whatever she might be going through that he is unaware of.
I also love that regardless of what she and her cousin had going on or them not being on speaking terms, they had each other’s backs. Especially when Iris needed help.
I love how patient August was and keeping his word about Iris being at the center. Even when she wasn’t yet able to share what she experienced he still kept her and her daughter at the forefront. The way he cares for Iris and Sarai just warmed my heart. Even though this book was a heavy read, it was an absolutely beautiful story and written with such care. Kennedy Ryan never misses.

Internal monologue and overly descriptive writing slowed the story down

Wow. This was incredible. The beauty of the writing was only enhanced by the performance of the narrators. I don’t normally prefer books with such heavy content, but this was so well done. It also felt educational and realistic as to what living in a dv situation is, without it being overly preachy or having a savior complex.
