Historical fantasy is typically a genre I don't really see in middle grade fiction, so it was refreshing to read Mark of the Thief a few months ago. As a sequel, Rise of the Wolf was very mediocre, which usually doesn't occur often. I actually found it to be on the same level as the first book. It wasn't much better or worse, though I did realize a con that I didn't notice in the first book, it still delivered an entertaining engaging read.

I enjoyed this one a lot more than the first. I teared up! Nic grew a lot as a character in this book. He is a courageous, cocky, sometimes dumb teenager who is learning what it means to love and care for others.
This is a great follow-up to The Mark of the Thief.

I am really enjoying this young adult series.

Nic, spent his early life as a slave. Now he has immense magical power, but the entire Roman empire is against him.
