This is a tough read. Everyone acknowledges that, and we're all right in that. Although a lot of that could be helped by better maps (and if people and races didn't all need three different names, to be used interchangeably, as if by whim to keep you confused).

So basically, if you're going to read this, even if it's 600 pages shorter than Ulysses, you'll still want to use the Internet as a companion.

I'm going to preface this with the fact that 17-year-old Angel would be very proud of me. That was about the time Tammy Williamson bought me my original copy of The Silmarillion from... I want to say Wal-Mart? I very clearly remembering opening the book, reading about 2 pages, and going... "Oh... Nope. Not yet."

Now at some point in our history Erin's mom bought her the goddamn Easton Press copies of the ENTIRE series, so my secondhand LotR and my Wal-Mart paperback Silmarillion were a little redundant, and not as fancy for sure.

Anyway, I just now have picked up these books and I might as well start at the beginning. 15 years after that original attempt I did actually enjoy The Silmarillion. I did read it in my head in Galadriel's voice, and in more than one occasion I had to take some breaks because my eyes were crossing with the "son of so-and-so, who then gave birth to this guy, the father of another name" for like 10 generations.
