Wow, this book was not what I expected it to be.

The pacing of this book was like running down a hill with a very gradual decline but somewhere along the line, it becomes steeper and steeper, and you don’t realize it until you’re sprinting down the hill. Not to say that the book is “downhill”, because I found the plot confusing but fascinating?

If you’re interested in reading some thing that has some mind fuckery going on, a really strange plot, and it makes you think about romantic relationships a little bit, this might be the book for you. I think it would be really interesting to re-read it in the future, knowing what I know now.

I can’t review this fully without giving everyone else the benefit of going in blind, which is how I think this book works best.

Synopsis/plot chat is a potentially slippery slope to spoilers here so I’m just gonna not. I’ll put something on my tiktok (eventually lol) that isn’t spoilery and you can check that out if you want.

tried hard, like really hard but i can't get myself to like it. it was just so boring, filled with unnecessary details & somehow to dense for me

4.5 stars, rounded up.
This is the kind of book where, if I had set it down at any point, I never would have picked it back up. Maybe I should rate it lower for that fact alone, but I won’t. Not today at least.
I really enjoyed this book once I finished it. Reading it was a bit difficult at times as the writing asked a lot of my poor little brain. It was beautiful but sometimes a chapter would go for 50 pages or a paragraph a solid 2.5 without allowing you to take a mental water break.
The story was very unique. I honestly cannot think of anything that compares, but maybe that’s because I don’t tend to read a lot of these literary fiction type things. It definitely made me think and had some lines that hit me very personally.
“In all of history, we had landed in the same city at the same time and, to ladle miracle upon miracle, we had met. What were the odds? What were the chances? How could I not love them all just a little?”
I will go forward recommending this book and plan to check out some of the author’s essay collections to see if they capture a similar vibe or feeling.

the last third/quarter of the book really saved it for me. i really loved the ending but found a lot of the middle part pretty repetitive and boring. i didn’t find lola as insufferable as many seemed to, but she definitely lacked some depth and i wish she had learned more from the experience. i had a lot of fun with the audiobook (i’m a slut for an author narrating their own book), but i’d find myself spacing out during some of the rapid back and forth dialogue/reflective parts. very interesting premise, fun read, well written, nothing extraordinary
