In some ways, Collins was ahead of his time. In this case, it's his understanding of None of Your Business. He spends a lot of time digging into the conflict between morality and respectability, with particular attention to instances where they diverge widely. The Handsome Hero Goldenheart has his choice of two ladies, one respectable without being much good, the other good without a shred of respectability.
Some readers complain about the way he bangs on about social justice issues, but since we haven't solved all of those yet, I think it's healthy for us to spend time thinking about how we treat the homeless and other poor people with lives that are different to ours.
