This is a great book both for those with autism and for those who love someone with it or work with autistic people. The author is also transgender and does a great job of discussing the different intersectionalities. It gives a great lived experience perspective of what it is like being autistic in an unfriendly neurotypical world and it points out the ways in which society (and us individually) can be ableist.

I wrote a really long review for this trying to work out how I felt about it, but I don’t feel like I’m ready to share it yet because I think my thoughts are too complicated, uneducated, and unfinished.

I’ll start by saying that this book made me feel incredibly seen. What I got most from this book was the context and validation it provided to so many feelings and experiences I’ve had throughout my life. Most of this book was me thinking “yes. I feel that... I know exactly how that feels... Oh that’s how you’d explain that.”
I think this book excelled at really breaking down how so many specific experiences can feel. I think if you are on the spectrum, think you might be, or just know someone who is; then you should read this book as it will provide so much understanding.
In a world where Goodreads would allow half stars I would give this 4 1/2. The only reason I didn’t give a full 5 stars was that I found some of the examples to be exclusionary in their attempt to be inclusionary (if that makes sense). I also found some of the suggestions and solutions to fully unmasking in the real world to be a bit idealistic and not necessarily feasible for everyone.

This was the first book I picked up to learn more about being autistic since being late diagnosed. I can see how the book is helpful for highly masked autistics. I do feel the book was generalized.

This was a mixed bag for me.
I definitely learned a lot about certain perspectives around how autism can be presented and experienced by various people groups which I found helpful and informative.
I also felt at times like this was much more opinionated than factual which as someone reading simply to learn more about autism I was a bit confused by.
