Even more powerful hearing Gay's perspective in her voice rather than just reading the words alone.

This book broke me so much that it took me almost 4 months to read - I emotionally (and sometimes physically) could not continue reaading further because of sheer sadness. Perpetual feeling of having a lump in my throat from trying not to cry for the duration of this read. I truly hope for the healing for the author (and all those who have gone through the same). The world truly is a horrifying place sometimes goodness me.

Some memoirs just feel like info dumps about the author but this, Roxane Gay was able to weave a thread throughout that continued to tie together the whole memoir.

Roxane Gay is such a masterful writer that I felt in good hands reading about sensitive topics. I'm glad I read this though it was difficult to find my footing sometimes in all the dark and troubling details. It's candid, sad, angering, challenging at once. Yet it was compelling and clever. It's my second Roxane Gay and I will surely read more in the future. Her perspective and wit are great.

In a word, brilliant.

It has taken me far too long to prioritize this memoir. I am left feeling  moved, challenged, and changed.

Gay’s prose is so clear and unflinching. Her writing manages to be direct and full of emotional resonance at the same time. I listened to this on audio, and the experience of hearing the author share her own story in her own voice, was especially powerful.

This is a complex, raw, and human book. I wish everyone would read it. If you’re waiting for “the right moment” like I was, maybe it’s now.
