I went to visit Dan in Chicago shortly after we had met. He had a friend over and they were playing a game. To occupy me, he handed me this book because it was short and he thought I would love it. This is a book that is now imprinted on my heart and the absolute best of Block's books.

I read this book ages ago now, and was completely taken with the author's style. While grounded in reality, this is also part urban fantasy as made up by the characters themselves. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of young adult work. Block's writing is edgy, modern, very very real. Her characters have a life to them that goes beyond the mere printed page.

What an odd little book. Usually I fall hard for anything with a high quirkiness factor, but this wasn't my flavor. Though the prose was child-like, the subject matter was mature, and the combination just seemed more misguided than revolutionary.

This is a book I had to read for one of my classes last semester. It was just okay, I was confused most of the time. It is a magical realism story set in Los Angeles and everyone has weird names. I honestly would not have picked this up if it was not required reading for a class. 2/5 Stars.

It feels like this book was written by an eight year-old in the late 80s with wealthy, open-minded Hollywood parents who would host parties in their house with a bunch of movie industry people and fun gay guys and let her find her own conclusions about how the world operated while not shielding her from sex or AIDS or anything like that. Super simplistically written-- feels more like a fairy tale rather than magical realism, which was my first impression. However, it is charming and parts of the writing do hit.
