From the first time Kandy laid eyes on her dad's best friend, she harbored a crush on him. As she grew up, her innocent crush also grew into something more. Quinton Cane reciprocated her feelings, but is reluctant to pursue a relationship because of all that's at stake. This first installment lays the foundation of Kandy and Cane's budding attraction that eventually turns into a forbidden affair.
I think the most notable quality of this book is its gripping vibe, especially with the taboo aspect. It was taboo, but it didn't make me squirm from discomfort. It did a great job with Kandy as her POV showed her growing up which includes how her view of Mr. Cane progressed. I also loved that Mr. Cane himself acknowledges that what he feels for Kandy will be unaccepted if they get found out.
However, I feel like their relationship, at least in this book, remained hinged on lust rather than love. I didn't buy it when they admitted to themselves that they love the other. Their relationship will have to be tested more for that particular l-word to be believable.
While the romance didn't blow me away, that ending was enough to make me want to continue on. It seems that the stakes will be raised even higher and I love me a dramatic story with heavy angst and a side of villains.
