This was my second delightful adventure with Amelia Peabody. Again I was remined very much of Lady Trent only there are less dragons and more Mummys. I found myself laughing out loud multiple times throughout the book. Whilst this is at its heart a cozy mystery (think Miss Marple crossed with Scooby Doo but in the best possible way) and has all the usual suspects I thoroughly enjoy the commentary provided throughout by Peabody the sass and obvious affection she has for her husband and partner in crime Emerson is a real joy to read. There was a time where all I read was mysteries however I have moved away from the genre over the past few years. This series may well be my re-entry to the genre. Interestingly it also has me itching to learn more about Egypt in general and has reawakened a long held interest for Cleopatra.

This book is very similar to the first one, but since the characters are more developed I maybe enjoyed reading it more. It is really more of an adventure story than a mystery—it doesn’t have the puzzle elements that normal whodunnits have. Plus the mystery element was just as easy to guess this time as last time. But I still enjoyed reading it.

What I Liked: I enjoyed reading this. I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first book in this series, Crocodile on the Sandbank - partly because Amelia and Emerson were an established couple – but ultimately I did enjoy seeing how the two characters have developed and grown into their relationship since the events of the previous book. I quite liked the parts showing them as parents and it was refreshing that Amelia wasn’t a hugely maternal figure – I liked that it was Emerson who had the most misgivings about leaving their child with Evelyn and Walter, and the parts with Amelia interacting with Ramses were very entertaining. Likewise, the relationship between Emerson and Amelia was very fun to see. There was an easy affection and real depth of feelings between the two of them that was quite lovely.
The mystery took a while to grow on me, but it was developed well with a few twists and turns that I didn’t see coming.
What I Didn’t: I just found it a bit slow. I did really enjoy it, but I didn’t feel any kind of burning urge to carry on reading or keep on picking it back up until the last 20% or so.
Overall: This was a nice follow up to the previous book in the series and I liked seeing more of Amelia and Emerson as a married couple. That said, it wasn’t the most fast-paced of mysteries and I found the mystery overall a little underwhelming.
Would I Recommend It?: Yes, if you’ve read the first book in the series and want to read more of Amelia and Emerson solving mysteries as a married couple.
Would I Read Something By The Author Again?: Yes.

While occasionally Amelia Peabody can be an irritating character this is also her strength. She's a believable character, full of flaws and foibles and quite likely to deliver a stern lecture to you about stepping in the way of danger while efficiently bandaging you.
Sir Henry Baskerville has discovered a tomb in Egypt but after his find dies under bizarre circumstances, Amelia and her husband Radcliffe Emerson are summoned to continue his work. Amelia applies herself to this work and also to the work of finding out the truth, as the bodies stack up.
I enjoyed the story, there were times when Amelia irrited me with her superior attitude but it was still a great deal of fun.

The fat-phobia was a bit hard to take in this one. It's funny how I breezily say things like, 'meet this book where it is!' when it comes to things like colonialism, but the fat-phobia in the narrative seems much more disagreeable. I should probably sit with that for a bit.
