As someone who was raised Catholic, I really appreciate the portrayal of the path to recovery from religious trauma. The ups and downs of Tamsin’s journey of self-discovery and forgiveness accompany her already difficult situation as a captive and pawn in a war against her kin. The spice was also excellent. I read part of this on a plane ride and turned my screen brightness ALL THE WAY DOWN. While some might feel frustrated that Tamsin goes back and forth from feeling free and embracing herself and her newfound life to experiencing crippling bouts of doubt and self-loathing, I think it quite accurately portrays the difficulty of re-writing your own narrative when you have been told one thing your entire life. My biggest issue with this book is the number of times the author used the word “unselfconscious” - seriously, so many times. But other than that very minor thing, this was an excellent read and I can’t wait to read the next book!

Oof. I really wanted to enjoy this and was deeply frustrated.

I recommend seeking an online summary and then heading in to book three.

This needed more editing and trimming. 222k words and it isn’t justified by plot, drama, character, or fun. It drags. Way too often the POV characters rumenate in their inner narrative. SUCH A SHAME because there is a rough diamond in this Viking omegaverse style fantasy series.  Book one had similar frustrations for me. But it wasn’t as long as this beast of a book. Book three is even longer. I won’t go there thanks.

Near the end it is written : “Ivar opens his mouth – but there’s nothing left to say. We all know what’s ahead.”

It felt ironic and meta. So much had been retained in this book and it dragged the weight down. The drama covers less than three weeks. And the sex scenes weren’t worth the bother.

The best part for me was the chapter of dialogue between Tamsin and Uradech in ch35 about the toxic patriarchy of her Strathclyde home. For example

“They have not seen me properly inhabit the role.
“Your ancestors showed men like him mercy, and they subdued your kind for centuries,” Uradech says. “Centuries. Does that not make you furious?”
“It does.”
The words come out as a hiss. ”

I'm thrilled to have discovered this series at the tail end of 2023. Taming the Wolves is book 2 in a historical why-choose omegaverse, though books 1 and 2 predominantly feature the heroine's relationship with Thrain as her primary love interest. Robinson has mentioned that this is intended to be a 6 book series, and I can see the appeal of drawing out Tamsin's story that far.

While there are plenty of smutty good times in this romance series, Robinson doesn't skimp on plot or character development. You're fully immersed in an intense political battle with a more fantasy-leaning take on the omegaverse. I would recommend this series to folks who enjoy both Kathryn Moon and Sierra Simone.

You know those books you don't want to finish because they're THAT GOOD?!? This is one of those books! I loved the dynamic between the characters in this Viking Omegaverse reverse harem, and the I seriously can't wait to read more! I'm looking forward to seeing how Olaf comes out of his celibate shell.

This book picks up right after Stolen by the Wolves. I love this series so much so far, it has an amazing balance of spice and plot. Definitely can’t wait for the next book to come out!
