A strong ending, but I feel more mixed on the series as a whole now than I expected. As with 3, I am not sure I enjoy the way Revel’s art evolved throughout the series. His lines are thinner now and somehow they’ve made everything look sloppier and less defined than when he was using lines that looked like quick, thick gashes of black.

In terms of story, this ends very well and the juxtaposition here is very smart. Probably about the same level as the first volume. The emphasis on Adolf is a particular asset in this volume. Really sets up the conflict between him and Goliath and gives that long final battle such high stakes. The only issue there is that Revel leans too much on Heisler’s insane villainy. We know he’s a monster, he doesn’t need to constantly tell us.

I’m also not sure about Clayton’s role in all this. As plot device in Adolf and Goliath’s stories, he functions well, but I’m not sure I buy his arc or even him as a real person by this point. He’s sort of the least interesting thing about all this, but he’s too integral to the plot.

Regardless of those issues, I still really like this series and encourage everyone to read it. Might have to revisit it in a couple of years and see if the last 2 volumes and the art style grow on me.
