This is the story of four sisters and the paths that life takes each on. In the years after the Civil War, Jo March lives in New York and achieves her dream of being a writer. Amy who had traveled to France with her aunt is, now in Paris studying art; painting, Amy meets a childhood crush, Theodore who had proposed to Jo and was rejected. They would eventually get married, Meg the oldest is married to a school teacher, and Beth their shy sister with a passion for music. When Beth develops a devastating illness that brings the family back together.
" A bird sang blithely on a budding bough, close by the snow drops blossomed freshly at the window, and the spring sunshine streamed in like a benediction over the placid face upon the pillow, a face so full of painless peace that those who loved it best smiled through their tears, and thanked God that Beth was well atlast"
Its sad that Ms. Alcott was pressured into marrying off Jo when that was never her vision for the character. The novels narrator tells readers that Jo was not comfortable with her feelings for him" was mortally afraid of being laughed at for surrending, after her many and Vehement declarations of independence" At the end of the novel Jo and her husband have turned the estate she inherited from her aunt into a school for boys, where they later raised their two sons and their two nephews.
She describes herself as being happier than she deserved.

Part 1 was so much fun to read, the old prose is so interesting, the relationships and expectations of women in these times. Part 2 I didn’t enjoy as much but it was wrapped up so well. Classic for sure, can’t wait to watch the movie

A bit verbose, and a little difficult to start, my youngest had read it and insisted we read it as a family. I came to appreciate the March family as the book went on. Will probably read Little Men and Jo's Boys eventually.

The story is cute but i’m realizing once again that i prefer books with an actual story arch. Also, thank fucking god for female emancipation

Hear me when I say!!!! This book is a 5 star but..... I have many emotions attached to this book and it's pages and would love to go on and on about how it has shaped my life and others who I hold so dear to my heart in very positive and negative ways so, instead of venting here I'll save it for my therapist
