3.75

I don’t really know what to say. So I’ll break it down as a list
•3.75 for enjoyment, however if I rated solely for writing and plot I’d probably do 3-3.5

•the writing in this book was not very structured, especially not compared to book one

•the plot in this was a bit disjointed and not cohesive, as I felt with some of the character writing as well. I didn’t mind too much because I loved reading about Charlotte and Jamie’s dynamic but I can see why people were really turned off by this book

•speaking of Charlotte and Jamie- they’re toxic. Yeah. But I love them together? I see their relationship as more of a mirror of Sherlock and watsons (though I’m unsure of the details as I’ve only seen some BBC episodes), a relationship highly unlike most teen couples. So I was okay reading it.

•however, the handling of charlottes trauma was done well in her pov, but not at all in Jamie’s. I don’t believe it was the author’s intention to write a harmful representation of sexual trauma and relationships dealing with it, but because it was nearly indistinguishable between Jamie’s frustrations with Charlotte as a person vs him dissecting her trauma and learning how to deal with it, it read as him upset with how she was neglecting him due to her trauma. Though to me, it seems that was not at all the authors intention, and was just due to disjointed nature of writing. So I’d rather critique the quality of how it was written rather than vilify the author for mistaken intentions.

the ending? Wtf? lol. Very discombobulated. I know it was an intentional cliff hanger but the dynamics between everyone made no sense, probably somewhat intentional, but I think the author should’ve written it a LITTLE bit clearer. Fortunately the series is finished and I’m hoping the questions are answered coherently in the sequel, but yikes. And poor August. We only just met him. I liked him, I feel so bad for him.

•I have liked Charlotte since book one. Maybe loved. I have taken to both our main characters. However, did the author want people to hate her after this book? I didn’t, but given how she was written especially towards the end, she has like no redeeming qualities in terms of how she treats others. I know she was raised by awful parents but how she treated August was pretty inexcusable, she was young so… I’ll try to get past it but yeah. The ending was crazy and she didn’t look any better then so I’m hoping her character is on a better track next book! Don’t hate her, I like her contrary to this point but she wasn’t don’t many favors in this book except for her pov.

•one of the positives of this book was 100% charlottes pov. I love her point of view. I love her voice. I love seeing how she truly feels about Jamie.

•though I do have feelings about the character writing in this, I do think our author gives great voices and personalities to our main characters. They truly feel like two different characters. With differing opinions. But a mutual caring for each other.  I think Jamie and Charlotte are so fun to read about, hence why my rating is probably higher than quite a bit of readers.

•it was very easy to imagine these characters as 20-22yr olds, and I subconsciously was. Probably cuz I’m 22. But yeah. It’s ya, which always contains teenagers doing stuff that is so unrealistic, so I can’t complain too much.

It seems like I didn’t like this book by my review and critiques, but I didn’t hate it. I see why others had a tough time with it. I just do like our characters so much, and I love character driven stories so it didn’t bother me as much. I’m excited to continue with the series! There’s definitely a lot of questions that need answering, especially after the ending.

Liked the first one even though it was kinda confusing. But this one was even more confusing and, honestly, kinda bad.

although i was very invested in charlotte and jamie’s relationship developing, i found that it got too toxic for me at a lot of points throughout this book, which made it quite a lot harder for me to enjoy. as for the actual mystery, i did find it a bit hard to follow at some points, especially towards the end when everything was ‘revealed’, and feel that this was a bit rushed. despite this, i did have a good time reading this book and am excited to see where the series goes in the next books.
