So good. Such awesome. Devi is like Ripley and Jax had a love child. Love Rupert. Brain melted by cliffhanger. Thank God the next two books are coming out quickly. Needs a proper review.

Ooh that ending, this is SF with a sprinkle of fantasy, reminded me of Marion Zimmer Bradley and some earlier SF writers. Devi Morris is a mercenary with plans and training and now she wants more training and to find it she joins The Glorious Fool, where she might be able to get herself ahead quicker, that or dead. Many secrets and lies and I really enjoyed the read.

The main character is a horny, smart-dumb jock of a space mercenary who loves her guns so much that she names them. If that sounds like something you'd like, then you'd definitely like this one. The action and the technology reminded me of Murderbot, and it activated some of the same pleasure centers in my brain that Murderbot does. I already put the next two volumes on hold at the library. (This one ends on kiiiiind of a cliffhanger.) I didn't love the acting choices of this narrator--this one was more enjoyable to read in print.

Wonderful fun! Fast moving sci-fi about Devi the mercenary, an oops-didn't-realise-it-was-my-bus-stop book. I really enjoyed Devi's sheer pleasure in combat, and the underlying mysteries of the novel (which are definitely not resolved in this volume) are quite intriguing.

First, before I can think about other aspects of the book, the writing has to be detailed. There are spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, contradictions and repetitions beyond belief. It's Extremely simple and surface level with laughably cringey dialogue, so much so I assumed this was a children / middle grade book. And I feel it probably should be in that category or at the very starting end of young adult, considering the main character doesn't let herself properly swear etc.. The only mature theme included is the mention and description of sex a few times -which could've easily been tweaked to keep critical points from being missed.
Despite hating the writing, I got to the 25% mark (when I was originally going to stop reading) and realised I was enjoying the plot. I now saw the writing as trashy that was comfy and easy to read. All throughout the book, I felt the plot always unfolded at a good pace with interesting mysteries and good development of character dynamics. Devi was really lovable at the end, with a good sense of self and showed that her cockiness was earned through all the fighting during the novel. There was a great amount of action and I was content with the ongoing world building, feeling like I had a good grasp on information given to me whilst knowing there's so much untold about the world around us. Book one ended at a good, pivotal point so I'm excited to start the sequel.

A surprising book that kicked back my desire to read as I used to.
A pleasant and entertaining story.
Book 1 my favorite but the other 2 are equally lovely.

4.5 stars. I don't know if I've ever enjoyed reading a sci-fi space opera as much as I enjoyed reading Fortune's Pawn. It's what Ive been looking for in a grown up sci-fi for a long time, and what I was hoping for when I picked up Ann Aguirre's Grimspace. That one didn't quite live up to my expectations, and since reading it I have still not felt the urge to read more of the series. Fortune's Pawn however, was so good I started the next book in the series immediately after finishing it. And what an ending! I couldn't help but be angry at the ending and curious about what would happen next at the same time.
I thought the world building was really well done, without being confusing and needlessly complicated like a lot of sci-fi. The alien races were interesting and I liked that there was not just conflict between the different races, but also amongst each race itself.
I liked Devi and and every other character, with the exception of Caldswell. I don't know what to think of him yet. Devi reminded me a little of Kate Daniels from the Ilona Andrews books. She is one tough cookie who knows what she wants. I liked the love interest a lot and even though I did get angry with him a couple of times, I can't wait to find out even more about him and what drove him to make the choices he made about his life.

I really loved this. I've been having a bit of a book slump, and this was just what I needed. I had already put the second on hold at the library before I finished the first. The main character had the potential to be annoying, because she was a little bit arrogant, but I actually liked her a lot. I'm really looking forward to the rest of this series!
