I really enjoyed this book! It was definitely spooky but not overly scary, but the tension was wonderfully built and the dread was real reading this. The characters are well fleshed out, and many times whilst reading I was like no Arthur! Don't do that, you numpty!
Tbh I'm not sure if there's anything that could have improved the book, but I don't think it was 5 stars either? Maybe it could have been a little scarier, or more points expanded.
Overall, I enjoyed this book immensely and would definitely reread it.

I don't know why but I found the main character so funny for some reason. Bless him

Maybe it’s just not the book for me. I genuinely struggled keeping my focus, the whole book just dragged forever

Love the play, enjoy the film, thought the book would match or exceed in atmosphere but it didn't? Mistake of listening to the audiobook over reading the book?

That was odd, very slow and just moody. I don't know if that's how most ghost stories work but that felt odd.

So, I've seen the movie before, and they end somewhat differently but having seen that sapped some of the suspense. Also, I think for the mood to set in I think I would've benefited from reading this in longer stretches. I read this at the end of the day in smaller segments and I think that broke the atmosphere of the house and the marsh.

But that's just things that I think dampened my enjoyment. I still really liked it. Arthur's journey to the marsh and the house and his encounters with the woman are very suspenseful. Overall, the book has this looming atmosphere of dread and suspense starting with the locals close mouthed apprehension about Arthur's visit to the house to Arthur's early sightings and his stay at the house. It was just heavy and moody to read. In a good way of course.

The most tense part was when the dog ran out into the marsh. The climax came close but when I was reading that part I was just about to set the book aside and go to sleep but the dog ran into the marsh, started yelping and there was no way I was setting the book down till I knew how that ended.

I grabbed this on a whim when I was at the bookstore. It looked like a classic ghost story so I had to have it.

Up and coming solicitor Arthur has been sent on his first major work trip for a deceased client. He's to go to her very remote home, surrounded by a marsh and only accessible at low tide, and go through her papers to ensure her affairs are in order. But he doesn't expect to see the woman in black in town, a ghostly apparition who reeks of malevolence. It seems many townspeople are afraid of her and even more afraid of the Eel Marsh House where Arthur is to go, but why?

This was good. Pretty predictable but a quick, enjoyable read.
