The story felt slow to me, and the romance didn't feel like it had a lot of chemistry -- more like I was expected to be believe they were attracted to each other because I know it's a romance

The plot didn’t seem to be going anywhere, the protagonists didn’t seem to have any definable goals, and the romance was really toxic and not in any good ways. It had the vibe of a high school pack of communication drama and the captain seemed like a mean girl too often for me to like her.

Good start to a good series. I saw this on Booktok The mix of LGBTQ+ Sci-fi with steampunk made it a no brainer for my TBR. Fletcher writes colorful characters, interesting steam powered systems, and fights against the system that I love. I definitely recommend this book and series to anyone who loves sci-fi with romance and characters fighting against a corrupt system.

This book was so fun. Firefly vibes with Sapphic main characters and lots of queerness in all shades.
The story was fun and took interesting turns. It was fun to see the characters grow and for the peril to expand in steady ways.
I'm excited to read th  next book in the series.

I liked the characters, but it was a bit too dialogue driven for me and that particular style is hard for me to get into. It also wasn't the type of sci-fi I was looking for (I like hard-sci), but that's a me problem, not a book problem. It reminded me a bit of Firefly, but if it had all the problematic bits removed, and I honestly did like the characters, especially Ned and Hyun. I also liked the nod to MtG, that was fun.

i found myself losing interest in the romance aspect of the book pretty quickly and, although i really enjoyed the universe and the world building, the style wasn’t really to my liking and, ultimately, i stopped tying to push through.
might give it another try later though, since the universe was interesting and it did make me happy to have older sapphic representation!
