Very dry. I gave it 17.5 chapters before pulling the plug.

A Long Tale

This story definitely had its ups and downs for me. For the most part I really enjoyed it, but some bits hung on far too long.

I generally enjoyed this book, but there were a few parts I took issue with. The main love interest begins when the main character is in her early teens and her pursuer is 18, and there are passages that imply he is attracted to her naive qualities. That gave me a bit of an ick feeling. The other thing is that there is a minor character (Jumpin’s wife, Mabel) who is repeatedly described as notably fat, and yet when her weight is mentioned it is “almost 200 pounds”. It’s a small detail but as a mid-sized person who is over 200 pounds, it made me feel like the author has never actually met a fat person. All of this said, I enjoyed this easy read and found the writing to be good but not great, not necessarily worth the hype that this book has received.

This book left something with me which will remain always. Her careful crafting of character and her intertwinement with nature was truly special. Left me reeling and I didn’t know what to do with myself. I didn’t even care about the “plot” the characters were so expertly written that it didn’t matter. Stunning.

I liked this very much, but *** SPOILER ALERT MAYBE *** ...

....the courtroom scenes were ridiculous. As a lawyer, the leading questions and testifying by the prosecutor was really over the top. Cross was nicely done. The end, like the end to lots of books, was satisfying but soapy. That said, I raced through the book and truly enjoyed it.

5 stars. Although it took me a second to get into. I'm glad I stuck through it, I thought it was a beautiful story, the ending was amazing. The setting was great and I loved the family dynamics part. This was so heartbreaking but well written!
