a bunch of dumb teenage boys explaining why they thought a girl they didn’t know killed herself. a 12 year old who considers themselves “deep” would enjoy this. not hardly as nuanced or profound as it is said to be and it is so very obviously written by a man. i never dnf books but ig things change. do not read this book unless your a 7th grader who wants to tell people they’ve read this book.

wasn’t sure how i’d get on with the book because i really did love the film when i was a teenager, but i am so glad i read this. at times i had doubts as i felt for such a serious topic it was sometimes trivialised but now it makes complete sense- it’s being told from the perspective of schoolboys and has a really accurate sense of confusion and naivety. i also was unsure if i’d feel really emotional towards the girls because they are portrayed as such vague characters because the boys don’t really know them, but the way you could feel their despair and the overwhelming sense of depression from their house was crazy. loved loved loved!

The only word that comes to my mind when I want to describe this book is the french word "glauque". There was a sort of dark, fascinating and haunting feeling throughout the whole time I was reading. The end was announced from the beginning and the book was carried out like a greek tragedy: you know everyone's going to die but there's something that makes you want to know more, things gradually get gloomier and gloomier until there's a peak of tragic events and it's all over. I'm still wondering "why did they do it?" The book doesn't answer all your questions, it sort of leaves you confused and twisting your mind for a reasonable explanation... Almost as if it had been a real event in your own neighborhood.
