Finally got up the courage to finish this one off!!!! It deals with one of my greatest fears, which is being alone, and I was not in the mental space to handle it there for a while. This is a solid continuation from the first book; it's actually a prequel that catches up with the timeline of Wool by the end. A lot of interesting political commentary and some deep psychological stuff in there too!

A great continuation of the silo series.

In comparison to the first book in the series (Wool), this book focuses more on the political processes before and during the events of Wool, which might be boring to people who signed on for the science fiction action of the first book but more interesting to people wondering "how did this even happen? how did we get here?". You'll see some familiar characters pop up with a different perspective - some more removed and others more intimate - as well as plenty of new characters. My biggest complaints: so many male characters and a less coherent switch between POVs.

Not as strong as Wool, but a fascinating prequel and alternate perspective to that book. It feels a bit darker to me since the subject matter is the people who built the silos and why (and none of it's good, just in case you were thinking it might be).

I was immersed, but found myself wishing that it didn't take so long for the details of the truth to emerge, since the general strokes of where it was going were clear early on. I didn't find Donald a particularly sympathetic character, either, which might be intentional but also somewhat reduced my engagement compared to how I felt with the characters in the first book.
