One of my favorite books, I think this should be required reading in schools because it’s so informative about older history and the roles women played in it, and it emphasizes the importance of love and solidarity between women, no matter their status

This book is a beautiful description of the timeless strength of female friendship and confidence.

For much of my life I felt alone, but over the years a circle of women came to love me and I came to love each of those women in return.

Every girl -- no matter how small-minded or unfortunate -- had a mother who nursed and cared for her.

This is a gorgeous book that really transports you to its setting of 1400s China. See is an excellent author who does not shy away from the complex flaws in her characters. She is also a meticulous researcher, this book is very informative. Despite the main character being very insulated from the outside world as per the historically accurate setting, there are diverse characters in this novel. This book has many heartbreaks and intimately looks at the consequences of loss, but overall I came out feeling nourished and positive from reading it. All author promises were fully realised, so it is a satisfying read.
