Will be reading this again in 2022 for the newly adapted curriculum topic Misty Mountain, Winding River.

May 2021: It's too long to read in a packed curriculum. Not enough hours in the school day.
My class enjoyed the chapters we studied but he does waffle a bit.

April 2021: read again for reading planning.
Will be reading it again to my class. I'm excited but nervous to get through 300 pages in 6 weeks.

What an unexpected adventure - 4*

I first read this book years ago and then I watched the trilogy of films so I remembered the first 40% of the book really well. The last 60% I couldn't remember at all.

I really enjoyed this but I have no idea how I'm going to read this to the children within 6 weeks and a full, broad and balanced curriculum... I don't know but I'm excited to teach it in guided reading and hopefully in English.

Book 9 of the 2020-2021 academic year.

I feel like I'm missing something, and I really tried but it was just not for me. I felt bored and it took me so long to finish it. I wish I could see the magic in this, but I don't.

Oh! what a journey it was! Full of adventures and songs and spectacular incidents. A delightful piece of literature indeed.

I'm very happy to finally say that after years of doubt and second thoughts, I've finally picked up a book by J.R.R. Tolkien. I wish I had picked this up when I was younger, I would have definitely loved it more back then. But anyways.

To be honest I went into this not knowing what to expect. Because this one is a children's book and I had no idea how the characters tied into the later trilogy. But I did know there's a ring and that it's important. Haha. So it was cool to see how that ring came to be about Bilbo. The Hobbit is purely an adventure and for that, it really is enjoyable and heart-warming.

Bilbo was such a great protagonist, show casing the very opposite of what 'a hero' is expected to be these days - read: he wasn't physically competent or a cocky bastard. It's really refreshing to see an honest, kind, life loving character. We learn and grow with him, and by the time he comes home I genuinely felt sad that it was all over.

And by that time I had learned to love all the dwarfs as well, especially Thorin - that idiot. I'm not sure what's Gandalf's deal. But I'm guessing I'll be learning more about him and his deal with the other books.

The plot itself was simple - and I had to remind myself at times not to expect something extraordinary. I'm also not going to lie but the book did drag at times. But nonetheless, I did enjoy The Hobbit! And I am READY to dive into LOTR!
