This book is said to mirror the different stories of the history of man. It is based in a poor, dusty neighborhood outside of a paradise with high walls where the grandfather of the ally lives. The stories are really spectacular, and it is great to start thinking in the streets of this world, seeing and wishing after what is behind the high walls, admiring the heroes who think differently and want to change the alley, following all the family and love stories that are a part of it.

After Gabalawi kicks his sons out of their mansion, the children spawn generations of people and myths which take place in an alley at the base of the mansion. In this alley the stories of the Abrahamic faiths play out, and you can recognize familiar characters on every page. (The chapter about Mohammad, in this book “Qassem”, made this book so controversial it got the author stabbed!)
“Forgetfulness is the plague of our alley.” Over generations you witness history repeat itself. The people of the alley repeatedly get fed up with the poor living conditions and abuse from the gangsters and try to live life more like their ancestors, and yet every time someone comes a long to “free” them in some way (stand ins for Moses, Jesus, and Mohammad) it doesn’t take too long for the community to revert to its previous power structure.
10/10. This is the first book of Mahfouz that I’ve read and it has certainly convinced me to read more.
