I was diverted by the notion of dragons serving alongside man as an aerial force during the Napoleonic Wars as a alternate history. The author did a great job of introducing the main characters and the development of their mutual devotion to each other. But I have to admit the aerial combat scenes left me a little bewildered, with all the roman dragon names... but then I'm not much a fan of battle scenes of anykind. I think at some point I will continue to book 2 to see what happens next!

3.75 ✨ what a fun book!! The pitch is- napoleonic wars but with dragons. For me, the main characters and their relationships were the point of intrigue and focus for most of the book. However it soon became over shadowed by, you guessed it, dragons in battle. The final part of this book redeemed some of the areas where I found myself a bit uninterested. Overall it was a fun time and I loved our main characters, but I just don’t feel strongly enough yet to give it 4 stars or above.

Deeply excellent. Not my usual thing, but wonderfully executed - I'm totally hooked. Glad my husband read it and I stole his copy.

I really enjoyed this, and read it in two days. It is like Master and Commander, but with dragons. While I did find Laurence a little stuffy at times, given the setting I suppose that is forgivable. And the dragons are pretty cool. Too bad it wasn't illustrated, in full color!

I enjoyed this book, but didn't love it. I liked the relation between Laurence and Temeraire. I thought it was a bit strange he called the dragon "my dear", but for the rest I liked how they interacted. I didn't care much for the war. Since this book is mainly about war I decided not to continue the rest of the series.

It is absolutely mind-blowing how boring this was. The main character is a dull, chinless British guy who is embarrassed even thinking about sex, and the plot (if you can stand to call it that) is just a boring war story that happens to have a mild-mannered dragon. Yawn.
