There is such a startling clarity, depth of feeling, and complexity to Goethe's writing. It truly caught me off guard how sincere and tragic this book is, and how genuinely torturous Werther's experience was as an artist and Romantic. This is surely a great precursor to modern epistolary (or otherwise) unreliable narration, and does not at all fall behind its posterity. There are so many clever metaphors that are delightful to unpack, and the descriptions of nature are second to none. I will definitely be picking up Faust sometime, hopefully soon!
