We only just bought this and I’ve already read it so many times to my son. We love it! It’s so whimsically written and the artwork is beautiful.

This is probably meant to be read to little kids, but adults can definitely enjoy it too. Flipping through the pages filled with beautiful art by Charles Vess and important instructions, I felt like this book would be a perfect source for writing prompts or "imaginary prompts". With their parents' help, for example, children could come up with their own stories inspired by the detailed illustrations and short but wise instructions. Is the Frog Prince waiting for someone? What creatures lurk under the Tree of Crows? To me it felt very much like the card game Once Upon a Time. Although I don't have any kids (yet), I really needed to have Instructions in my small Gaiman collection.

"If any creature tells you that it hungers,
feed it.
If it tells you that it is dirty,
clean it.
If it cries to you that it hurts,
if you can,
ease its pain."

This little book is as much a list of instructions on how to write a fairy tale, as it is a list of instructions on how to live your life beautifully. You can read it every day, you can read it just once, you can read it out loud to yourself or read it to a child. Everyone will get something out of it.

"Trust your heart,
and trust
your
story."

Classic Neil Gaiman. Not only is the short fable beautifully written, he picked an unbelievable narrator to bring it beautifully to life. Love this.
