I inadvertently skipped the second saga of Paddy Meehan (so I plan to go back in history), only to find our heroine's fortunes greatly improved, though her insecurities still careening unchecked. Meehan is a great character, a reporter, turned author, turned columnist who always seems to be aggravating the wrong people. Here, she's unwittingly become the target of an IRA operative. Mina is such a good writer, and such a pleasure to read.

Okay, I am a complete sucker for Paddy Meehan. I was going to give this fewer stars because it is not the best book in the world, it isn't the best written, but gosh darn it, that Paddy Meehan is one of the best characters ever. I only wish there were more of these.

Great novel. Rich, complex characters; vividly realised settings, both geographical and cultural (Glasgow, Irish Catholic family); great colloquial prose with strong images and lived-in description (I mean attentive to the sensations and experiences of the characters experiencing the settings). I came to this book after watching the tv adaptations of the two previous titles in this series, but this book is much better than either of the dramatisations.
