I liked this story even more than it’s predecessor. The romance was adorable and I had quite a few chuckles throughout. There was much more going on and you got a glimpse into a lot of the townsfolk’s lives. I fell in love with everyone on Cannery Row. They all had such big hearts. I can’t wait to see the movie now.

No one writes characters like Steinbeck. I was debating removing a star for some of the reductive tropes used to describe non-white characters, but I think overall it's outweighed by character complexity and the simply enjoyable plot (and at least Steinbeck includes some diversity? Always hard to judge with older works.)

Fantastic read! No time to write a proper review for the present, but I will get there eventually.

If there’s anything I need to do in light of my feelings about this text, it’s re-read Cannery Row. This was an utter joy: funny, warm-hearted and infused with the spirit of community care. It’s perhaps not an example of Steinbeck at his very best—there are some unnecessary scenes and the romance between Doc and Suzy is not always as convincing as I’d have liked it to be—but it’s bloody close. (Team Hazel all the way!)

I liked Cannery Row better than this. You had to know the characters from Cannery Row in order to keep up.

It has been a couple of years since I read any Steinbeck, and it is seems possible to forget for a moment that this is the greatest of all American writers. This is a short but simply terrific "sequel" to Cannery Row, filled with magical characters and painted by the great storyteller. I'm delighted to look at my bookshelf and see several more short Steinbecks that I haven't yet devoured!
