This was so cute and fun! I read this on my lunch break. I need something to read in between more thought provoking books and this was a great option. I didn’t have to think about anything and I had a good time with this. I loved the message behind this. I could definitely resonate with this.

this graphic novel is about friend ship and so much more. It touch on some tough topics and shows the characters of color having each other's back as well as being strong women of their own right as well as having self doubt. but all four of our main characters are strong beautiful independent women. Now i will say this book probably isn't for younger readers because of nudity and language, but with that said i love this book and hope everyone pick it up

Even though I am not the target audience for this book, I thought it was really good! It gave me really interesting insight into an array of experiences and I liked learning about varied textured hair routines.

What I really appreciated about this book was that each of the four characters was fairly distinct from one another: they each had their own separate struggles and passions and personalities which made them really fun to read about. It also made their group dynamic super engaging.

I also appreciated how candid the book got: I thought that the nods to relationships, mental health, and family relationships were good, and I thought that the overarching theme of the power of friendship was communicated well.

The reason this book is 3.5 stars is pacing! I liked these characters so much that I wish we’d seen more of them. I thought that although it was important to bring up a variety of issues, it was hard to dive deeper into many of them because the book was so short. This is why I particularly liked the group chat section, I loved the way the characters texting were incorporated through text and visuals into the story that Nisha was telling. (Slightly more in spoiler section.)

This book was really good, but I ultimately wished we’d had more pages so I could spend more time with the characters because I love them and then we could spend time developing many of the issues brought up.

***spoiler section***

For those of you who will not read or who don’t care about spoilers, I wanted to elaborate on some of the reasons I thought the pacing felt funky.

First of all, I feel like Kim got the short end of the stick. In my opinion, it felt like her story was the least distinct - aside from her hair care routine, we didn’t really get much of her until the end, and even then what we got was sparse. I think this was due to the scene being primarily a group scene, so the little Kim lore we got was kind of thrown at us.

However, I think that the group chat section worked the best because we could get to know Nisha through her storytelling and the love triangle she got in, so I felt like that group scene didn’t take away from Nisha’s role as the focal point.

The Davene and Cookie-centric stories were probably the most well explored since they focused on their individual issues (Davene with her mental health and Cookie with her fraught relationship with her abuela), but even then we didn’t get much time to fully delve into how each of these issues affect their lives or how Davene and Cookie will continue to grapple with them.

Having said that, I think these characters and plots are super compelling, so I’m hoping that we get a sequel or something so that we can spend more time getting to know the girls individually and as a group.

A beautifully illustrated look at the power of a friend group in the face of all sorts of challenges with the common thread of hair maintenance woven through each vignette! This was incredibly touching, with tender moments, disappointing misunderstandings, and badass girls protecting girls. Highly recommend if you're looking for a graphic novel!
