Hurricane Katrina brought devastation to the Gulf Coast that took years recover from. A.D. tells the story of 7 people in New Orleans and the experiences they had while living through this historic storm.

I decided to read this this morning after getting reports in from Hurricane Ida on the anniversary of Katrina. I thought I was going to enjoy this book but man I just flew through this. I appreciated the many different experiences and perspectives we encountered in this book. As someone who heard about the events that played out from a state far away, I heard about a lot of the looting and violence that was occurring but the perspectives that came in this book provided a completely different perspective on that report. Hearing what happened at the convention center was astounding and I really appreciated the author not hiding away from a lot of the more depressing and saddening details that occurred there. Overall, I think this was an amazing tribute to the survives of Katrina and a great read for anyone who wants to learn a little bit more about what happened back then.

The art & storytelling are both pretty blunt, but it’s a really informative view on an important story.

This was a short, but focused look on NOLA and the victims of Katrina. It is centered on 5 very different people with different experiences of Katrina. Neufeld cares about his real life subjects which comes through in the writing. Art style is very much like Harvey Pekar's stuff which must have been intentional. A.D. points out the difference money can make in decisions surrounding a catastrophe such as Katrina.

Powerful. It felt elementary to me, but would be a good introduction to the storm and its aftermath to someone with little or no prior knowledge. My favorite character is hard-assed, no-nonsense Denise, who experienced the storm itself in midcity, and the days after at the convention center. The "thugs" were the good guys.
