This book was really really heavy and should have a HUGE content warnings on it. ⚠️ Rape, kidnapping, physical abuse⚠️

The first part of the book, though heavy, was really good and incredibly tense. If the book had continued with part 1 I think I would have give it a higher rating.

The second part of the book, to me felt incredibly improbable and would never happen in real life so it was hard to read and actually care.

Overall this book was good, but could have been better for part 2.

While this was a good book, I don't think it is responsible of me to give it more than 3 stars. The main reason for this is that even though it uses the whole "past coming back to haunt them" trope, the way this is done feels somewhat irresponsible and exploitative. The past that comes back to haunt our three main characters is
murdering their abusive father, then being captured and brutally sexually assaulted. Eventually, one of the sisters and her niece end up being re-captured and assaulted by the same men in the same town, which ends with the sister being murdered by one of the men

All of this feels extremely like an irresponsible way to use this typical thriller trope. Their victimization history should not be used this way. It should not be framed as something that will catch up with them eventually. And to put them in a situation to make the same decisions and lead them back to that situation feels like a lazy way to engage with the idea of being re-victimized.

Overall, while I understand what the book is trying to do, I feel like it was done irresponsibly.

DUDE.

How have I slept on Chevy Stevens for all these years?! This book was textbook suspense. The characters were so well developed. The writing short, succinct. There wasn’t a single word there that didn’t need to be. The structure was brilliant, taking us to the past, future, through two POV’s.

Brilliant. Lovely. I’m an instant fan.

The content that I’d warn people about comes very early in the book and was very shocking. The story developed into more of a thriller rather than a book centered around the violence. I thought the violent portions were written thoughtfully and weren’t described in too much detail, which I appreciated. It shed a light on the tragedy without glorifying it, which I thought was very respectful. That being said, I thought the book was good but wouldn’t recommend it to people just due to the content.
