Barnaby Edwards did a wonderful job acting/narrating this version of Reeve's book! I am definitely going to have to look for other books he has narrated. I enjoyed this one better than the first in the series, maybe in part due to the narrator's range for the voices and accents (and overall enthusiasm) but also because this novel seemed to have more humor and light moments though it still packed some suspenseful dark scenes typical to this rough dystopian world. Then ending seem poised to take the reader in a new direction, so I am rather looking forward to reading what happens next.

Too much teenage romance jealousy for me but it does make the story. Also a character too similar to Gilderoy Lockhart, pretending to be great but is just a good liar

Do I have to write a review?
Oh boy, this book featured most of the tropes I despise. Don’t read if you hate:

  • -Love triangles
  • -Underage MCs
  • -Miscommunication
  • -Troubles just because of miscommunication
  • -Inconsistent characters
  • -Cliches and stereotypes
  • -Too much emotional drama

I need a break to recover from some of the bullshit I had to read on the last 360 pages. But I can’t close this review without sharing two gems this book had to offer (spoilers).

#1. Our MC couple Hester & Tom were separated and didn’t know if they would see each other ever again, but after much drama Tom finds Hester and the first thing, THE FIRST THING, that comes to his mind was „oh wow, I really forgot how ugly she was“ - dude, wtf? 💀

#2. Pregnancy tropes. Do I have to proceed? Them being 17 and having the emotional maturity of a 3 yo doesn’t help. Them being the worst couple and having no chemistry doesn’t help. When did they even had time to do the deed? This really makes me want to drop the series.

#3. The plot. Guys the plot. A whole city gets hunted and in serious danger because Hester (FMC) sold its location to a bigger city because she saw Tom (MMC) kiss another girl and she wanted to be the one to save him during the attack so he’s her bf again. Because talking? Nah, we don’t do that. And no, I didn’t make that up.

Not quite as good as Mortal Engines... the novelty of predator cities has lost its shine. Hester and Tom's actions disappointed a bit in this installment, and I found the plot a bit darker than I expected, but a overall a fun read.
