This is classic super hero action with the super powers coming from cybernetic redesign of humans. 009 wakes up in a lab. He has been kidnapped and experimented on by Sekar and his scientists. His memory of his former life is suppressed and he cannot remember how he wound up in the lab. Together with the eight cyborgs who were created before him (000 - 008), he escapes and tried to stop their former captors from kidnapping anyone else and creating more unwilling cyborgs.
The team comes from a variety of backgrounds and each has different strengths and skills. One of the scientists involved in their creation was only looking for a way to save his son - much like the scientist in Resident Evil that created the virus to help regenerate his daughter's cells, but then it turned into a mutagenic nightmare.
If you enjoy super heroes, especially those who work in teams and have the interaction back and forth, then you will probably enjoy Cyborg 009.

I feel as though over half the story is missing. Everything happens much too quickly, making the narrative very ineffective. This is hardly surprising since they've condensed the story from 1933 pages of manga into a 120 page graphic novel. At the end of it, I'm still not emotionally invested in anything that happened.
And, boy, are these characters fond of striking dramatic group poses.

Recently I have been trying to make an active effort to read more comic books because I feel like I'm missing out so much on a genre that everyone else seems to love so much. But because I am unfamiliar with them please excuse what's bound to be a pretty ramble filled review.
Cyborg 009 follows our main character Joe who, along with 8 other people, has been kidnapped and modified into a cyborg by someone called the Black Ghost in an effort to sell them to start a World War. I found the plot interesting, but not necessarily innovative. I understand that this is a reboot of the manga originally written by Shotaro Ishinomori which was wildly popular but I think I would have enjoyed this so much more in its original form.
Other than an interesting plot that's about where my enjoyment of this story tapered off. I found the characters pretty bland. I liked their back stories but other than one or two pages nothing else was ever built upon. Most of this comic is dialog which isn't always bad but for me this book was so cliche. For example:
"I know it's temping to go back. We've all thought about it, but Jet is right. We need to stick together". Does that sound cliche to anyone else? No? How about this:
"Well what now? The Black Ghost is still out there...but so are we!".
I rolled my eyes a few times at this book. And although it has amazingly beautiful color art, the story within was pretty boring and cliche and I wouldn't recommend it.
