Notes:
- Well written, definitely more heavy on the philosophical perspective than the emotional one for me (even though it was obviously about emotional matters).
- I think I just didn't get attached to the characters much either to feel the weight of the emotions.
- Did enjoy the philosophical lens; I actually feel like I gained new ways to look at the familiar conceptual elements of heartbreak and love.
- Didn't feel quite propelled through the narrative overall though.

Basically, this is a book of philosophical musings documented chronologically according to the linear development of urban romance. Nothing new. Most of de Botton's observations are what have already presented themselves as epiphanies during conversations with Jo and Janine. Still, it felt nice to just laze on a red couch at the library on a raining day pondering on notions of urban love.

P.S. The publisher's choice of photo for the cover art is, well, baffling.

Tác giả đem lại cho độc giả một niềm an ủi to lớn sau khi đọc xong cuốn sách, rằng hoá ra mình không phải là người duy nhất có những ý nghĩ như vậy trong tình yêu, và rằng những suy nghĩ đó không có gì đáng xấu hổ trên phương diện triết học vì đó là lẽ dĩ nhiên của loài người. Ta luôn có thể nhìn thấy mình ở đâu đó trong mối quan hệ này, lúc là nhân vật “tôi”, lúc là Chloe, đôi khi là sự kết hợp của cả hai người.

Sách có nhiều quote khá hay và có thể khiến bạn tâm đắc, mặc dù càng về cuối thì càng trừu tượng và khó hiểu. Sẽ hợp với mấy bạn thích deep deep mà hay nghĩ ngợi nhiều trong tình yêu.

”Với tình yêu trưởng thành, chúng ta không bao giờ nên sa ngã từ cái nhìn đầu tiên. Chúng ta nên kìm lòng cho tới khi nhìn thấu được lòng sâu và bản chất con nước. Chỉ sau khi đã có cuộc hội kiến thấu đáo về chuyện con cái, chính trị, nghệ thuật, khoa học và món ăn nhẹ thích hợp ở trong bếp, cả hai mới nên đi đến quyết định là họ sẵn sàng để yêu nhau. Trong tình yêu trưởng thành, chỉ khi nào chúng ta thực sự biết rõ người kia thì tình yêu mới xứng đáng có cơ hội thăng hoa phát nở.”

An intellectual, philosophical, psychological look at love written in a series of short essays. I found this book insightful, and I very much enjoyed Alain de Botton's writing.
