This was just not for me. I would’ve DNF’d early on if I hadn’t been reading this for the Rory Gilmore challenge.
It’s very dated which makes this a boring read in 2023. The diary structure is interesting, but it kept the characterization too light. I know nearly nothing about Bridget and how she really feels. The daily addition of weight, calorie intake, and drinking really wasn’t for me, and made me feel uncomfy every time I picked up the book.
Altogether probably a good book for a different type of person. Not worth the read for me, unfortunately.

Rare case of liking the movie more than the book.

This would be Mindy Lahiri’s favorite book. Very enjoyable despite the fact that the cover quite disconcertingly looks like Lady Cassandra from Doctor Who

Besides being hilarious, it is such of portrait of late 90s/early 00s female neurosis.
If you struggle with EDs/disordered eating or obsessive behaviours regarding body maybe approach with caution, as Bridget spends most of the book obsessed with weight, using her journaling to catalog caloric intake and weighing herself obsessively. I don’t think this is meant to be in any way shape or form glamorous or taken to be smtg she should be doing, but rather a show of how affected she has become by society’s expectations and apparent rules and priorities.

Made it 60% before it had to be returned to library. Enjoyable most of the time but didn't love it as much as I loved the film. The beats of the movie influenced how I approached the book.
Graphic: Eating disorder and Fatphobia
